Our season went to worse during the latter half of 2008 as we went 12 points behind leaders Barça. It was really dumb not to strengthen the squad during summer and it showed when a lot of first team players got injured. With a dumb coach in Schuster in charge, we had little chance then but now things have changed and are looking bright. I hope we win some silverware this season maybe in Europe. It will be really nice.

A seafood is very nutritious form of food and i like them very much and they form a major part of my diet. I have always wanted to try different types of seafood recipes and share them with my friends as i have a passion for cooking and it happens to be one of my hobbies. I stumbled upon the website GreatAmericanSeafoodCookOff.com. It had organized a cook off of seafood and there were participants from all over the country of United States. I took a look at the recipes of the five finalists and they were really exciting. The best part about these recipes is that all of them use domestic seafood. By doing this, you get to conserve energy and there is less pollution because the fish need not be refrigerated for a long time and it does not involve a lot of transportation. It is very easy to obtain and also nutritious and fresh. Out of the five recipes that were present, i liked the one by chef Tafari Campbell of Maryland and it is called Pan Roasted Glazed Rockfish with Peas and Carrots. The recipe attracted me instantly and it consists of two types of seafood- the rockfish and crabs/shrimp along with a whole lot of other ingredients. I felt that the recipe needed a bit more hot and so i decided to add some spices to it and it tasted really excellent. The other recipes were also nice but i did not have the time to try out all of them. But you can always do it. All you need to do is visit the website and find the other details from them. The Japanese automobile company Mitsubishi Motors is all set to enter the luxury sedan category with its new model, Lancer Evolution X. The launch of the car, also known as Evo 10, will be preceded by that of Outlander sports utility vehicle (SUV).

While the SUV will be made at Mitsubishi's Chennai facility and unveiled in the 2nd half of 2008, the Evo X will be fully imported resulting in a price tag of Rs 21.70 to 23.5 lakh. Sunday, 6 july 2008 was that fateful day in the life of Roger Federer as he saw himself losing out to Rafael Nadal in the finals of the Wimbledon championships for the first time. It is also his first loss on grass since 2002. Nadal's 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (8-10), 9-7 victory took 4 hours and 48 minutes of actual playing time but occupied all of the afternoon and most of the evening because of two rain delays.

Both men were chasing Bjorn Borg, one looking to overtake while the other trying to equal. Eventually Rafael Nadal, the man who tried to equal his record of winning both the French open and the Wimbledon championships in the same year won. It was a terrific match of tennis and one of the best i have ever seen. The final result gave me a weird feeling as i like both the players. I was both sad and happy at the same time. One interesting trivia is Nadal leads FedEx 4-2 in grand slam finals, with three of those victories coming on the clay of Paris. Will Federer be able to bounce back? Only time will tell.

The second semifinal of the Gentlemen's singles was played between the muscles of Mallorca- Rafael Nadal and Rainer Schuettler of Germany. the finalist from the last 2 years is in terrific form this time around and looks like he'll end Federer's run for sure. The Swiss ace's plans for winning a record 6th straight wimbledon crown looks in jeopardy now with Rafa in such fine form. Schuettler who was obviously tired after his epic quarterfinal match has played 6 hours more tennis than Rafa before their clash and ran out of steam just at the wrong time to hand Nadal a straight sets victory. Final score: 6-1 7-6 6-4.

The study, conducted by Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz fron Virginia Commonwealth University, found that women who eat half their daily calories first thing in the morning lose more weight in the morning lose more weight in the long term than those who start the day with a small breakfast.
Jakubowicz reported that the big breakfasters said they felt less hungry, particularly in the mornings.

FINALLY Spain are one step closer to winning the euro championships. The last time they did so was way back in 1964. Also they are qualifying for a major finals for the first time in 24 years. they did that in style with a superb performance against the Russians. The Russians started off with some vigour and the first half was equally contested. Spain received a big blow when the tournament's leading goal scorer, David Villa had to be substituted in the 33rd minute due to an injury. In came Fabregas. The half ended the way it started.
The second half was when Spain began to dominate and from then onwards it was no looking back. They scored three beautiful goals between the 49th and 81st minutes and on top of that Saint Iker had a second clean sheet in as many games which meant Spain are through to a major finals in 24 years. But as the important rule in every tournament says- never get too excited about Spain at any point in time, we gotta keep our fingers crossed until they have done it for real!

OKAY! After finally watching the movie after a long wait, i am made to think was it worth the wait, money etc, etc....My friends who watched the movie with me started to sing praises of it almost after every scene while on the other hand i wasn't convinced as much as them:-(

What could be the reason? This film makes use of the chaos theory or the butterfly effect to narrate the story. It starts with Kamal addressing to an audience at the Nehru stadium in Chennai, moves to 12th Century when the local Shaivaite King’s move to remove the Vishnu idol from a temple is opposed by Nambi (Kamal), a Vaishnavite. King Kulothunga packs the idol and the idol lover together and dumps both in the Bay of Bengal. Then we are transported to 2004 where Dr Govind(Kamal) invents a deadly virus and Ex-CIA bad guy Christian Fletcher tries to take it from him. Rest of the movie is one big chase which finally ends up in the Bay of Bengal where the Vishnu idol lies. Every chase needs 2 chicks, the good girl with the hero is Asin and the vamp with the villain is Mallika Sherawat.

The screenplay was lively and well paced. Many people said the script was loosely etched to fit in all the 10 Kamal's but i didn't feel the same. It was neatly packed. So where did the movie go wrong? The biggest ditcher was Michael Westmore. The make up in the movie was pathetic. It looked literally like the characters were wearing masks. Was westmore still thinking of star trek? You call this guy a genius and is this the best he can do or it was because he was not provided with enough money? Whatever the reason, the make up was horrendous. Take a look at Bush(one of the 10 characters portrayed by Kamal ). You might get the feeling that it's near perfect but it isn't actually. When a chennai based firm can manage to get a fair looking Rajni in the movie Sivaji WHY can't this be done to Kamal? Reason is TIME. The fair looking CGI of Rajni in the movie took one year to create. But you can argue that he played only 3 foreigners in the movie. What was he thinking? Indians settle for compromised stuff? Only Kamal knows the answer and he might have his justifications as well.

The next drawback was the graphics and the CGI of the movie. Obvious reason being shortage of money. The Rise of the Machines, for example, the budget for computer work, including visual effects, creature effects, and special effects, was $USD 28.2 million. That money is much more than the entire budget of the movie.Also Asin's cries of Perumal in the movie were sick at times though she was cute.

FINAL VERDICT: The effort is huge. The product is not. Lack of perfection outshines his strife for exellence. 3 stars on a scale of 5.

Hello people. WIth EURO 08 hogging the limelight, i find it very difficult for me to update my blog. But now there is a pause to the tournament as the quarters are over and the semis waiting to happen in a couple of days , i find some time to write about this man- Iker Casillas Fernández.

Saint Iker was the hero as Spain progressed to the first major semi final since 1984 and will now play Russia. The game was dull and lifeless- thanks to Italy's negative football. 120 minutes of football failed to separate the two sides. It was the dreaded penalties yet again. Spain started scoring first with Villa getting the job done with a cool penalty. then came Grosso and Cazorla who all scored before casillas produced a stunning save to deny de rossi. Advantage Spain. Senna and Camoranesi scored before Guiza was denied by Buffon. Looked like Italy were back in business. NOT to be. The saint pulled off another save to stop di Natale from scoring. This setup Fabregas to catapult Spain into the semis. He did it in style and Spain were through. All was because of this one man and his brilliant saves. Captain Courageous. The saint has done it so many rimes for Real. He has now proven to the world why he is the best shot stopper in the world. Vamos Casillas.........!

For all you diet conscious South Indians who were wandering everywhere looking out for healthy foods, wait a second. You will be astonished to find that the South Indian table definitely has healthy foods to offer.

All steamed items like IDLI, SEVAI, APPAMS are high on nutrition. Puffed rice balls and ground nut balls are also high in nutritional value.

There are urundu's(balls) made from different flours like the green gram flour or the Bengal gram flour with a mix of brown and white sugar that is usually given to children during summer. The PUTTU which is made of unpolished red rice becomes a healthy snack with less use of coconut.
Another healthy snack is ADAI which consists of four kinds of pulses and drumsticks and spinach leaves when prepared with less oil. MASALA PURI, again made with less oil is also a healthy snack.

As all of u know, i planned to go on a diet to lose some weight starting from 16th of this month. I was very enthusiastic and had a great start to my plan. The first day as mentioned had to be full of fruits of my choice. But due to my greediness i restricted myself mainly to watermelons and also ate little quantities of grapes, apple, pineapple and pomegranate. I felt elated because the day went off so well. I also did some workouts and played soccer on the evening of the same day.

Dawn of day 2 and this is where trouble began. First of all, it was my mistake cos i believed that day 2 will go on smoothly as well. I'll tel u what. It was the toughest day of ma life. Boiled vegetables tastes yuck. Cant stand their odor. So i consumed only raw carrots, a cucumber and raw tomatoes for the whole day apart from one baked potato that i had for breakfast. Trust me when i say this: "It makes you feel sick consuming only vegetables. Literally sick." I felt feverish and my tongue felt so bad. I didn't have a good night's sleep and kept thinking about whether i should continue.

Finally came day 3. I still felt i could continue and had watermelons for breakfast. Only after i had finished eating them i really felt that this was not for me. I came up with a wise decision: I'll QUIT. It doesn't mean that i am a quitter. Only problem is the diet is too stupid to follow. Then i realized that if you wanna lose weight or get fit, then follow a balanced diet along with some exercises. FAD DIETS DON'T WORK.

MY DIET FOR THE NEXT 7 days

THIS is my diet regimen for the next 7 days starting today.

Day One All fruits except bananas. My first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested to consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs on first day are very good.

Day Two All vegetables. I am encouraged to eat until i am stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of my choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, i will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. I may top the potato with one pat of butter.

Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of my choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

Although some medical historians believe that syphilis first appeared in Spain among sailors who had returned from the New World in 1493, others have concluded from archaeological evidence that syphilis probably originated in the Old World but may have been confused with leprosy. It was not widely recognized until an epidemic in Europe at the end of the 15th cent.

Transmission

The most prevalent mode of transmission is by sexual contact; infection by other means is possible, but its occurrence depends upon an open wound or lesion to permit invasion of the organisms. A person with syphilitic sores has an increased chance of contracting AIDS an infected partner. An infected mother can transmit the disease to her fetus; 25% of such pregnancies end in stillbirth or death of the infant, and another 40% to 70% will result in a baby with congenital syphilis, which, if untreated, can progress to late-stage syphilis and cause serious damage to the brain and other organs.

Symptoms

The development of syphilis occurs in four stages. The primary stage is the appearance of a painless chancre at the site of infection (often internal) about 10 days to 3 months after contact. There are no other symptoms, and the chancre disappears with or without treatment.

The secondary stage usually begins 3 to 6 weeks after the chancre with a rash over all or part of the body. Active bacteria are present in the sores of the rash. Headache, fever, fatigue, sore throat, patchy hair loss, and enlarged lymph nodes may be present. The signs of the secondary stage will disappear with or without treatment, but may reappear over the next 1 to 2 years.

Untreated syphilis then goes into a noncontagious latent period. Some people will have no more symptoms, but about one third will progress to tertiary syphilis, with widespread damage to the heart, brain, eyes, nervous system, bones, and joints. Late syphilis can result in mental illness, blindness, severe damage to the heart and aorta, and death.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is made by symptoms, blood tests (required by many states before issuing marriage licenses), and microscopic identification of the bacterium. Until the advent of penicillin in the 1940s, treatment for syphilis was with mercury, arsenic, and bismuth. Penicillin is the antibiotic of choice for all stages of syphilis treatment, but penicillin-resistant organisms have complicated treatment of the disease. Even late-stage syphilis can be cured, but damage that has already occurred cannot be reversed. Despite available treatment, the incidence of syphilis in the United States was on the rise until 1990. Lampard Could Force Barça Move

Barcelona could buy Frank Lampard in the summer for as little as €7m from Chelsea if the player chooses invoke a new FIFA ruling that would allow him to go. With the player already searching for a house in the city, rumours are growing by the day.

The England midfielder has already been seen house hunting in Castelldefels close to Barcelona and that has led to speculation that he could be lining up a switch to Camp Nou.

Lampard could use the FIFA rule that allows players to just pay up the remainder of their contract when they want to join another club after record ruling from Court of Arbitration for Sport.

That means that he could leave Chelsea even if the club do not wish to sell in order to complete his dream move to Barça.

While Lampard and his Catalan wife already own property in her home city of Barcelona, the recent trip saw the former West Ham star claim that he needed a house within four months.

One report suggests that the move could be facilitated by José Mourinho taking over at Camp Nou if Frank Rijkaard steps down in the summer, but that appears unlikely.

Deco has already hinted that he wants to leave and that move would pave the way for Lampard to come in an be the attacking force in midfield for Barça.

Lampard has already turned down a contract offer from Chelsea and has just one year left on his deal at the end of the season.

The Early Years

Karl Benz was born the son of an engineer on November 25, 1844 in Karlsruhe. His father died when Karl was barely two years old. Despite being relatively poor, his mother ensured he had a good education. Karl Benz attended high school before going on to study at a technical college in Karlsruhe under the tutorship of Ferdinand Redtenbacher. This course of study was followed by a two-year traineeship at a mechanical engineering company in Karlsruhe. Whilst he was there, Benz gained basic experience in all areas of work. His first employment followed, as a draftsman and designer at a scales manufacturing factory in Mannheim. When he lost his job in 1868 he moved to the "Gebrüder Benckiser Eisenwerke und Maschinenfabrik" company which was concerned mostly with bridge construction. His interest in motor vehicles was sparked, as so often is the case, by the bicycle. His employment at Benckiser was followed by a short period spent working in Vienna, also at an iron construction firm.

The Beginnings

In 1871, the technically-minded Benz founded his first company in Mannheim with a mechanic by the name of August Ritter. The workshop had a typical Mannheim address: T 6, 11. It was, however, soon to become clear that Ritter was not a very reliable partner. It was only with the help of his fiancée, Bertha Ringer, that Benz was able to overcome this obstacle. Without further hesitation she paid in her dowry to buy Ritter out of the business. In 1872 Bertha Ringer and Karl Benz were married. Bertha Benz emerged as a crucial player in the future success of the fledgling company and undertook the world's first long-distance journey in an automobile. Karl and Bertha Benz had five children: Eugen (*1873), Richard (*1874), Clara (*1877), Thilde (*1882) and Ellen (*1890).

Karl Benz's business did not enjoy the best of fortunes at first. For example, his "Iron Foundry and Mechanical Workshop", which Benz later renamed "Factory for the Production of Metal-working Machinery" had its tools confiscated by the bailiffs. During this period Karl Benz concentrated on developing the two-stroke engine, in order to find another way of earning a living. After two years of development his first stationary engine finally spluttered into life on New Year's Eve 1879. It was a two-stroke model as the company Gasmotorenfabrik Deutz had already been awarded a German patent for the four-stroke version in 1877, thanks largely to the work of Nikolaus August Otto. Benz received several original patents for perfecting his two-stroke engine, which he worked on until he achieved series production standards. For example, one of these patents was awarded for the engine speed regulation system. He used his newly developed battery ignition system to induce combustion in the engine.

With new investors and partners in the Mannheim court photographer Emil Bühler and his brother, a cheese merchant, together with the financial support of the banks, Benz converted the company into a joint-stock company in 1882 and called the company "Gasmotoren-Fabrik Mannheim". Karl Benz had a mere 5% stake in the company, was "only" classed as director and was not the main supplier of ideas. His partners in the firm were also trying to exert increasing influence on his designs and a combination of these factors led Benz to leave the new company in 1883.

Benz & Co.

Later that year Benz found a different source of financial support in Max Rose and Friedrich Wilhelm Eßinger who ran a shop in Mannheim which sold, among other things, bicycles and who Benz met through his interest in cycling. In October the three men founded the company "Benz & Co. Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik". The workforce soon expanded to 25 men and the company grew to the point where it was even able to grant licenses for the production of gas engines. Benz could now devote himself one hundred percent to the development of his car engine. Financially secure, he took a different route from Daimler, who installed his engine into a carriage, by first designing a complete vehicle in which he could house his four-stroke gasoline engine. In 1886 he was granted Patent 37 435 for the vehicle and unveiled his first "Benz Patent Motor Car" to the public.

Between 1885 and 1887, three versions of the three-wheeler were designed: the Model 1 which Benz donated to the Deutsches Museum in 1906, the Model 2 which was probably altered and rebuilt several times, and lastly the Model 3 with wood-spoked wheels which Bertha Benz took on the first long-distance journey in 1888.

By 1886 the existing production facilities could no longer cope with the insatiable demand for stationary engines and "Benz & Co. Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik" moved to a larger factory building in Waldhofstrasse in which motor vehicle engines were manufactured until 1908. The appearance in 1890 of new partners, Friedrich von Fischer and Julius Ganß, marked the growth of "Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik" into Germany's second-largest engine factory. In 1893 Karl Benz introduced the axle-pivot steering system into automobile construction and in 1896 he developed the "contra" engine which was to become the precursor to today's horizontally opposed piston engine.

The World's Largest Automotive Manufacturer

Between 1894 and 1901 the Benz "Velo" was built at Benz & Co. It was a reasonably priced, light automobile for two people which signaled the breakthrough to higher sales and, with total production of some 1200 units, can be legitimately described as the first series production car. As the turn of the century approached, Benz & Co. had grown into the world's leading automotive manufacturer. In 1899 the firm was converted into a joint-stock company.

Julius Ganß joined Karl Benz on the Board of Management becoming the member responsible for commercial matters. The vehicle production workforce grew from 50 in 1890 to 430 by 1899. In this year alone, Benz built 572 vehicles.

The Final Years

On January 24, 1903 Karl Benz announced his retirement from active work within the company, taking a seat on the Supervisory Board. His departure was the result of internal wrangling in the company caused by the management's decision to employ a group of French designers in the Mannheim plant, with the aim of facing up to the competition from Mercedes. Karl Benz's two sons Eugen and Richard also left with him, although Richard returned to Mannheim in 1904 as passenger car production manager. By the end of the year sales of Benz motor cars had reached 3480.

In 1906 Karl Benz founded the company "Carl Benz Sohne" in Ladenburg, which was jointly owned by himself and his son Eugen. At first, they planned to build naturally aspirated gas engines. However, times were changing quickly and demand for this type of engine dwindled. This necessitated a change of tack to vehicle production and by 1923 some 350 "Carl Benz Sohne" vehicles had been produced. In the meantime, the Benz family had relocated to Ladenburg. In 1912 Karl Benz left the company as a partner, leaving his sons Eugen and Richard to run the business alone.

The company expanded further and branched out into other markets, for example into England where the "Carl Benz Sohne" vehicles were often employed as taxis and where their reliability earned them great popularity. In 1923 the last vehicle was built, followed only by two 8/25 hp vehicles a year later which Karl Benz kept for his own business and personal use. He enjoyed using both cars and never sold them. They have been preserved right up to the present day.

In contrast to Gottlieb Daimler, who died in 1900, Karl Benz was there to witness the blossoming of motorization and to see the products of his inspiration. He died on April 4, 1929 in his home in Ladenburg. Today this house is used by the "Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler Foundation" as their headquarters and as a location for a range of events.

Uefa Tell Referees To Get Tough

Referees who were invited to the European governing body's annual mid-term meeting in Cyprus last week were told that overly aggressive challenges that threaten the safety of an opponent warrant a straight red card.

Officials were also instructed to clamp down on group confrontations by acting swiftly before the situation escalates and not hesitating to issue yellow cards, particularly when players run a considerable distance to get involved.

"The players involved have to realise, 'If I approach this incident, I get a yellow card,"' former referee turned Uefa instructor Hugh Dallas told The Observer.

"The referees are charged with a responsibility of protecting the players' safety. The players have got to feel safe on the field of play," he added.

Dallas also said that he believes that the illegal use of arms and elbows is also becoming "more and more dangerous."

Uefa are, however, pleased with what they see as progress in the area of holding, pushing and pulling shirts in the penalty area with no less than five penalties given for the offence in the Champions League group stage.

The referees were also given instructions to be equally firm with player dissent and the business of asking for opponents to be booked by the waving of imaginary cards.

And, from this month, assistant referees will be positioned closer to the tunnel when the half-time and full-time whistles are blown in an effort to prevent trouble between the two sets of players as they make their way back to the changing rooms.
Finally, with Uefa president Michel Platini remaining firmly opposed to the idea of a 'video referee', TV monitors are to be removed from technical areas for all Uefa matches.

Real Madrid Eyeing Hibs Starlet

Real Madrid have confirmed that they are watching Hibernian striker Steven Fletcher and could make a €5m offer at the end of the season for his services.

Los Merengues' chief scout, Julen Lopetegui, revealed that the highly-rated Scottish starlet is one of a number of gifted youngsters the club are tracking.

Fletcher, 20, has only recently been rewarded with a new six-year contract at Hibs, but Madrid could buy that out if they really want him, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Madrid, meanwhile, had no such concerns, as half an hour in they were able to waltz forward and grab a second. Guti played a fine one-two with Raul, who in turn was able to dribble around Sergio Asenjo and tap the ball home.

Minutes later, it was 3-0, with Arjen Robben perhaps only just onside from Guti's masterful through ball, with Asenjo being dummied the wrong way as the ball sailed past him.

Madrid were now free of pressure, and it began to show in their passing play, which was growing ever more direct and attractive.

This culminated in their spending a lot of time in the box, and thus winning a penalty five minutes before the break.

Sergio Asenjo - who had been so impressive in recent weeks - showed his inexperience by giving away a penalty needlessly after coming off his line to challenge Baptista.

Raul, the old master, punished the tyro with a fine spot-kick, and Sergio was left to pick the ball out of the net for a fourth time.

And then it was five. Royston Drenthe silenced his doubters with a brilliant pass to Guti, the provider turned finisher, who in turn fired home.

No doubt the Madrid faithful in the Bernabeu stands would have passed half time by placing wagers on how many their heroes would rack up in the second period, but in fact it didn't quite work out that way.

Madrid, no doubt under orders to conserve their energy, started the second period slowly, although Guti and Robben almost carved out a fine chance five minutes in.

But the best opportunity came at the other end, where Oscar's rather innocuous shot saw Casillas merely palm it to Llorente. Thankfully for the injured 'keeper, Ramos and Cannavaro were able to clear off the line.

Diarra came on for Sergio Ramos as coach Schuster protected one of his star assets, but far from struggling with a loss of shape, Madrid, in fact, made it six.

Guti took his personal tally to two after Arjen Robben's sly cut-back to the edge of the box. The finish was unorthodox, cracking off both posts before settling over the line.

Valladolid took off Sisi as it became increasingly clear that it was game over, while Soldado came on for the hosts, who wanted yet more goals.

They duly got one, and it was a well-taken strike from Royston Drenthe. Guti set him up for the near-post finish after a move that, while Route One, was still easy on the eye.

Valladolid somehow found the will go on, with Oscar Sanchez firing a free-kick well over, and then Borja drilling a shot just wide as Madrid relaxed.

The stadium was considered the best and most modern football venue of the times, and it's first expansion in 1954 also made it the biggest in the world. The history of the stadium developed in unison with an extraordinary team of champions, whose list of honours managed to match the greatness of this superb stage. They are the golden years that fulfilled every supporter's dreams: the best team playing in the best stadium.

At this point, it is fair to acknowledge the importance of one person, a symbol of Real Madrid, a visionary who was ahead of his time, a person whose faith firmly led and commanded this magnificent project, developing it successfully. The man was Santiago Bernabéu, after whom the White Coliseum was named. His grandiose vision of a stadium that could hold the ever-growing Real Madrid fanbase -a pipe dream in many people's heads- came to fruition thanks to his undeniable effort and leadership.

Who hasn't heard of Real Madrid? This famous Spanish club is one of the most renowed and successful names in world football.

Over the past 100 years, arguably no other club can boast such a glorious history as the Spanish giants, their name being synonymous with glory nights and famous names. Indeed, with 9 European Cups and 30 league titles in their trophy cabinet, Madrid were voted as the best team of the 20th century by FIFA, with plenty more history to speak of, too.

In The Beginning

The formation of the club was convoluted. Football was introduced to the Spanish capital by immigrant professors and students, many from Oxbridge, these mainly English ex-pats forming Football Sky in 1895. A split of the club in 1900 saw New Foot-Ball de Madrid and Español de Madrid formed, with the latter splitting yet again to result in the formation of Sociedad Madrid FC

It was that team, after three further name changes, that took on the mantle of Real Madrid Club de Fútbol. As suited a club of English influence, the team colours were chosen as all-white, following the example of Corinthians FC back home.

Even in the early days of regional league football, Madrid were to gain major honours, winning five early Copa del Rey titles. Then, as the game went national, Madrid picked up their first two league titles in the early 1930s, but had two wait another two decades before success would come their way again.

When it finally did, though, such success was to change the face of the club - and that of the modern game - forever.

Unrivalled Pedigree

With players such as Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskás, Francisco Gento, Hector Rial, Raymond Kopa, and José Santamaria in the team, the 1950s Real Madrid side is regarded as one of the best ever.

The team won domestic honours, with the championship arriving in 1953/54, 1954/55, 1956/57 and 1957/58, but it was in Europe that this side truly made their name.

Indeed, in the first ever European Cup Final, los Merengues defeated Stade de Reims-Champagne 4-3 to lift hte inaugural trophy. Four more finals and four more victories followed in the competition, culminating in what many describe as the best final ever played, Madrid thrashing Eintracht Frankfurt 7-3 at Hampden Park in Scotland in 1960.

The swinging 60's saw el Real lift the Spanish league title on no fewer than eight occasions, while the European Cup belately returned to the Bernabeu following a win over FK Partizan in 1966.

The good times continued into the 1970's with championships arriving in 1972, '75, '76, 78, 79 and then 1980. However, the early 80s proved an unusually lean spell for the Madrid giants, with little silverware to speak of in that time, a victory in the short-lived and much-maligned Copa de la Liga aside.

Then, however, the club embarked on an incredible run that saw them win the league five years running (1986 to 1990), largely thanks to a world-famous quintet of fantastic talent. The Quinta del Buitre consisted of Emilio Butragueño (el Buitre), Manolo Sanchís, Martín Vazquéz, Míchel and Miguel Pardeza, comprising arguably the most memorable Madrid team since the early 60s.

Into the mid-1990's and Los Merengues saw two league titles and one Copa del Rey arrive, but it was towards the end of the century that the club finally lifted itself back to the very top of the game as they defeated Juventus in the 1998 European Cup Final.

However, that victory was not enough to save then-president Lorenzo Sanz, as he lost the election soon after to construction magnate Florentino Pérez.

In his early years in charge of the club, the new supremo stuck by the tried-and-trusted method of sticking with the old guard who had brought success back to Madrid. Indeed, Luis Figo was his only signing during his first season in charge. That was the summer immediately following their second European Cup win in three seasons, the men in white racking up a victory over Valencia in Paris.

Then, the transfer policy changed. Pérez added Zinedine Zidane to the mix, the classy Frenchman emblematic of a new age of strengthening.

The new president's vision of world superstars combined with homegrown youngsters emerged, the man himself labelling it 'los Zidanes y los Pavónes', after the stylish French midfielder and the promising, cantera-bred defender Francisco Pavón.

It seemed a fitting enough way to close the century as the club was named as the Best Club of the 20th Century by FIFA. Then, perhaps a couple of years late, Madrid showed their old class once again in the Champions League final as Zidane scored an incredible winning goal at Hampden Park against Bayer Leverkusen.

The league title followed a year later, but almost immediately the way the club was being run changed almost overnight. The coach, Vicente del Bosque, was sacked, and no fewer than 16 players were allowed to leave.

All Change

Through the door came David Beckham in a whirlwind of publicity and a clear signal that marketing was - in the eyes of sum - now as important as what was happening on the pitch. Another dreaded lean spell followed and, for many different reasons, the team suffered, enduring three season without winning a trophy.

Several coaches came and went, as did several players, but seemingly nothing could lift the club out of the doldrums. Finally, early in 2006, Pérez resigned as president and left the way open for a new president to take over during the summer.

In July, Ramón Calderón, who had been a member of Pérez's board, won the fans' vote after promising things would be different. Fabio Capello was named as the new coach and Predrag Mijatovic, who scored the winning goal for the club in the '98 European Cup Final, was installed as the new sporting director.

The 2006-07 season was nothing if not eventful, the Merengues starting off in difficult fashion before racing back into life towards the end of the season. Following a head-to-head battle with Barcelona for the title, Sevilla snapping at their heels, Los Merengues lifted the trophy on the final day of the season.

It was a cathartic moment for an organisation in transition, and an achievement worthy of a great club. However, the drama wasn't over: Calderón promptly sacked Capello but left Mijatovic in the director's chair as he sought out Bernd Schuster to lead the club into its title-defending season.

Beckham, too, moved on, joining Ronaldo in a Bernabeu exodus - however, he was heading not to Serie A, but rather to Major League Soccer. The age of 'galacticos' like Zidane was said to be at an end, but Real Madrid still have a wealth of global talent on their books.

Duncan Edwards was born in Dudley on 1st October 1936 and throughout his short life professed his pride at being an ambassador for the town wherever his football career took him.

From his earliest days his love for kicking a football around the streets signified a special feeling and enthusiasm for the sport. By the time he was playing for his junior school his footballing skill was already being noticed. One schoolmaster watching the 11-year-old Duncan noted that the youngster 'told all the other 21 players what to do and where to go and that included the referee and linesmen!'

That same schoolmaster later wrote to a friend 'I have just seen a boy of 11 who will one day play for England'. How right he was! Two years later the lad wrote an essay in his classroom in which he mused about 'playing at Wembley' and his wish came true that same year as he stood on the 'hallowed turf' wearing a white England shirt playing against Wales in a schoolboy international. That day in April 1951 his footwork on the field dazzled everyone and one talent scout was heard to remark 'by God, they've got a good 'un there!'

The name Duncan Edwards will forever be associated with Manchester United and the so-called 'Busby Babes', a concept developed by United's Manager Matt Busby in the late 1940's when the club was badly in debt and unable to afford to buy 'expensive' players. Busby and his trainer Jimmy Murphy decided to employ a radical youth policy developing their own young players, creating the stars of the future.

Duncan was pivotal in that scheme and he made his debut for the first team on 4th April 1953 against Cardiff City - the team lost 4-0! The lad from Dudley was a mere 16 years and 185 days old. Three and a half years later Duncan celebrated his 100th appearance for United and the 'Busby Babes' were beginning to create the sensational legend that took the footballing world by storm.

In this age of footballing megastars who become international millionaires, it must be mentioned that Duncan Edwards was the rising star in a most promising firmament. His contract with Manchester United can still be examined and reveals that this 'solid gold' prospect earned a paltry £15 a week during the season reducing to £12 a week during the non-playing summer months.

Of course even in the 1950's there were other ways to bolster a superstar's income and Duncan became one of the first footballers to earn money endorsing products. He promoted Dextrosol Glucose Tablets, which his adverts said 'were a natural source of energy which you could rely on anytime, anywhere'. Whether Duncan actually ever took any of the tablets, of course, remains unrecorded!

Following the Munich crash, Duncan's body was flown home and was buried in Dudley's Borough cemetery. Over 5,000 people stood in silence outside the cemetery and lining the streets in tribute "to the lad from Elm Road on the Priory Estate.

Three years later, hundreds more turned out for the unveiling by Sir Matt Busby of two stained glass windows at st.francis church in Dudley commemorating the life of Duncan Edwards who died tragically aged just 21. As Sir Matt said that August day in 1961 'there will only be one Duncan Edwards and any boy who strives to emulate Duncan or take him as his model, won't go far wrong'.

At the time of his death, Duncan Edwards had the world at his feet. His footballing skill far outpaced his rivals and young supporters the world over idolised this big lad with the sure feet. Off the field too, things were going well and a few days before he flew to Belgrade, the manuscript of his book 'Tackle Soccer This Way' was handed to his publishers and later printed word for word as he wrote it. In the book he offers youngsters hundreds of soccer tips such as 'always respect the referee and be reasonable at all times'.

Today we are left to wonder what this towering figure (in every sense of the word) would have achieved had there been no Munich. Perhaps the question was answered by soccer supremo Tommy Docherty who said of him 'You can keep all your Bests, Peles and Maradonas, Duncan Edwards was the greatest of them all!'

Dudley was and still is very proud of its own soccer hero and even now, more than thirty years after that horrific air crash at Munich, visitors in their hundreds enquire about Duncan Edwards. His grave in the Borough's cemetery is still a shrine for pilgrimage by soccer supporters and often bunches of red and white flowers appear there, especially if Manchester United has a Midlands fixture.

The two stained glass windows in Laurel Road and a display case (containing some of Duncan's shirts, international caps and other memorabilia) can be found at the Dudley museum and art galery in St James Road - the exhibition moved there from Dudley Leisure Centre in July 2006.

A statue has recently been erected in the main shopping square in Dudley. The Borough's Archive & Local History Department at Mount Pleasant Street, Coseley, has an interesting file of press cuttings featuring Duncan and you can see there also copies of three rare books about Duncan plus his own book of footballing hints. Visualize the body you want to have and the kind of person you want to be. Affirm the following while visualizing the statement in rich detail:
1. I'm lean and in excellent physical shape
2. My waist is trim
3. My posture is erect
4. My breathing is deep and rhythmic
5. My muscles and strong
6. My joints are supple and flexible
7. I'm the kind of person who needs to exercise everyday
8. I'm the kind of person who likes to eat healthy food
9. I'm the kind of person who likes to eat slowly
10. I'm the kind of person who is calm, relaxed and tranquil

These statements tend to ingrain themselves in your consciousness and impact your behavior long after your workout routine. Mention each statement 3 times and visualize in rich detail the associated feeling. For example, when you say "My joints are supple" imagine yourself leaning forward and touching your toes with ease. Or when you say "My muscles are strong", visualize yourself doing a push-up with perfect form. This visualization routine should be carried out everyday and should last about 3 minutes.

The Warm-up Exercises:
The Toe Touch
Stand with your feet a little less than shoulder width apart. Knees very slightly bent. Raise your hands overhead. Lean back with your arms raised and look up at the ceiling. Now lean forward and touch your toes. Repeat very slowly 5 times taking 5 seconds to go down and 5 seconds to come up. Breathe slowly and audibly.

The Side Stretch
Stand with your feet a little less than shoulder width apart. Knees very slightly bent. Raise your hands overhead. Now lean to your left. Then to your right. Repeat very slowly taking 5 seconds for each movement. Breathe slowly and audibly.

Jogging in Place
Jog in place. Bring your knees high up nearly about the level of your hips. Keep a steady rhythm. Do this continuously for about 3 minutes.

The Toning Exercises
Overhead Squat with Laptop

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Hold your laptop (in it's carrying case please!) with both hands and raise it overhead by extending both your hands. Squat down till your thighs are parallel to the floor. Rise up. Take 2 seconds to go down and 1 second to come up. Breathe out while going down and breathe in while coming up. This exercise strengthens your posture muscles and your thighs.

Push Up
This is the basic pushup. Get down and face the floor while supporting your body on your palms and toes. Touch your chest to the floor. Get back to the starting position. Take 2 seconds to go down and 1 second to come up. Breathe out while going down and breathe in while coming up.

Squat Upright Row With Laptop
Stand in a wide stance with feet wider than your shoulders. Hold your laptop with it's handle with both hands. This means that the laptop will be dangling between your legs. Now squat down till your thighs are parallel to the floor. Come up and while you near the top of your stance, raise the laptop handle up till your neck. Keep your elbows high. Take 2 seconds to go down and 1 second to come up. Breathe out while going down and breathe in while coming up.

Squat Thrusts
Get into the push up starting stance (Get down and face the floor while supporting your body on your palms and toes.) Jump and bring your feet close to your hands. Get back to starting position.

Bent Over Row With Laptop
Hold your laptop with both hands and lean forward. Keep your back flat. And allow your laptop to dangle below your chest. Bring your laptop up to your chest. Extend your hands slowly until the lap top is dangling below your chest again.

Lunging Press with Laptop
Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Hold a laptop with both hands on your head. Lunge forward with one leg while simultaneously raising both your hands (and your laptop) overhead. Get back to starting position. Repeat.

The Turkish Getup
Lie down on the floor with a small weight (say a thick book like a bible in your hotel room.) Hold the weight in one hand and straighten the hand holding the weight (your arm will now be perpendicular to the floor.) Now get up from the ground and come up to a standing position while holding the weight perpendicular to the floor. When you finish you will be standing with one arm extended upward. Go back to the sleeping position while continuing to maintain the perpendicularity of your arm.

Abdominal Curl
Lie down on the floor with knees bent. Bend your arms across your chest. Now slowly curl your body until your shoulders are off the floor and you are looking through your knees. Then uncurl yourself back to the starting position. Do this really slowly ... one vertebra at a time.

The Cool Down Exercises
The Cobra
Lie face down on the floor with the palms of your hands on the floor at the level of your shoulders. Arch yourself up on your hands while twisting your spine backwards. Continue rising till you are able to look up and see the ceiling. Hold this position for about 20 seconds.

The Cat Stretch
Get down on the floor on your knees and hands. Round your back like a cat until you can see your navel. Hold for 10 seconds. Then arch your back till you can see the ceiling. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat.

The Routines
The visualization, warm up and cool down routines are common for all days. Only the work-out routines will change everyday. Pick a routine based on your interest, energy level , availability of equipment and previous day's workout. Do three sets of 10 reps each for each exercise. Rest 20 seconds between sets. Workout slowly and deliberately.

Day 1:

Push Up
Squat Upright Row With Laptop

Day 2:
Squat Thrusts
The Turkish Getup

Day 3:
Bent Over Row With Laptop
Lunging Press with Laptop
Abdominal Curl

Eating Smart
Diet is an extremely important part of a weight loss routine. Follow these tips to lose weight:

Eat a heavy breakfast
Consume a handful of almonds everday
Consume some milk-products (like skim milk or yoghurt) everday
Don't eat more than one egg yolk a day. Consume at least 3 egg whites everday.
Consume at least 10 glasses of water everday
Eat foods that are heavy in water - like watermelon and cucumber
If you want to indulge yourself with desert, ice cream or chocolate, do so before 3:00 PM when your metabolism has a chance to deal with the excess calorie intake.
Eat complex, unprocessed foods like whole wheat.
Avoid white bread.
Avoid sugar and sugary foods.
Avoid too much of caffeine. Stick to a maximum of two cups of coffee or tea per day (and that too before 4:00 PM.)
Eat very light after 4:00 PM and until bedtime (this is probably our most important recommendation.)

Tying It All Together
Reaching your ideal weight requires a combination of diet, exercise and most importantly stress control. If you sleep too little or sleep badly you will tend to overeat and you'll not have the clear-headedness required to eat smart and work-out regularly. If you are too anxious or stressed out your adrenaline levels will cause you to eat more sugar. So watch your thoughts and your responses to events in your life. Develop a harmonious, equanimous outlook to life. In the end, you will get what you deserve. Sleep well, eat smart and workout regularly. Don't overdo anything or you'll risk injury or your body will crave more food. Stay with the program for six weeks and enjoy your new life!
